Sooo, the trip is going well, although we broke down near Four Corners and got a 100 mile tow to Moab. We have a leak in a lower coolant hose. We managed to find a replacement, though, if we can just find a place to install it for us. We're still having a good time, though. We only had to wait 50 minutes for the two truck, and we had a fun ride. If all else fails, we can tow the Toyo home with a rental truck, but that seems silly for such a simple problem . . . I just hope the overheating did not cause further engine damage.

Barksdale Air Show!

This was sweet. My coworker was kind enough to drive, and we had a great time. It was a much bigger event than I anticipated. Parking was executed with military precision, but we had a long wait to get through the metal detectors.

I particularly enjoyed seeing the AWACS plane, even though it was a long wait. It generally holds a crew of 25, and it is packed with radar consoles and things like that.

I also enjoyed the cargo planes. The KC-135 is neat, especially the area where the boom operator lies down. It also had an APU (auxiliary power unit) inside the plane. Bizarro. There was even a duct along the top of the cargo area to carry exhaust gas to the front of the plane to be used for heat and for de-icing the wings.

The C-17A is as big as a house. You could stick my whole apartment in a corner inside of it. It carries 100 comfortably, but the flight mechanic said they could probably fit about 300 in there if they had to. They can even set up rows of bunks to use as a mobile sick-bay.

The C-130 is surprisingly small compared to many of the other planes. The B-52 is also smaller than I realized (even though I've seen them before); it's still pretty big, though.

I also found the aerobatics entertaining, particularly the C-17, which is surprisingly nimble. The fighter jets are unbelievably fast, particularly in vertical climbing ability. The Thunderbirds put on a good show, too.

There's more to say, of course, but these are the basics. It was probably the coolest thing I've seen since I've been living down here.

I was shaving tonight, and I felt something brush against my ankle. I didn't have my glasses on, so I looked down and saw a black blob. After freaking out and putting my on my glasses, I found a wild critter in my bathroom lapping up drips of water and poking at the garbage car. I took a couple of photos:

I turns out that it was a ferret. I freaked out because I thought it might be a rabid possum. Ferrets are illegal to have as pets in California, so I had never seen one in real life before. It coaxed it into a bucket and put it outside. I figured it would wander back into the wild, but it seemed to hang around. I feel a little bad now, because it seems clear it must be someone's pet. A young woman stopped a car that was heading for it, and a young man put it in a box and took it to the building next door. I'm sure it will find it's way home. By the time I was carrying it outside, I was thinking about keeping it because it was so cute, but I still hadn't realized that it might be a pet. It just looked like a big rat to me. Still, can you blame me for freaking out? How did a freakin' ferret get in my apartment?!

Truck stuff

I replaced the front right wheel bearings on the truck. I had been getting a fozzy-bear-like sound from over there (whocka-whocka-whocka), so this seemed like the best thing to do. The noise seems to have gone away. I also replaced the rotor while I was in there because rotors are cheap. The brake squeal also seems to have gone away :-) The only remaining problem is that the metal dust cap that covers the outside bearing is dented such that the cotter pin scrapes against it and makes noise. I suppose I could just live with it. I found a close-match at Tractor Supply Company, but it's about 1/16" too big in diameter. I think the solution is to pound out the old one somehow. Tough to do without a proper shop (like an anvil, for example), but I'll figure something out. Here are some pics:

Diamonds on the soles of my boots, maybe?

Today I took a ride to the Crater of Diamonds state park in Arkansas. It was cooolldd on the road, cooooooold. I was underdressed, and it sucked. When I got there, I felt my body entering early stage hypothermia, but a few minutes indoors and some clenching and relaxing of muscles (as Survivorman taught me) saved the day. Oh, and on the way I saw an enormous trailer home stockpile. No picture I could take would do this justice. It was a few square miles of tightly packed trailer homes and mobile homes. Here's the sign and a pic. I walked around a bit and warmed up. I took a short hike on the Prospector Trail (1.2 mi). Mostly I found it fun to see all the people digging around for diamonds. The place is just a big field of ash/dirt about 10 football fields or so in size. Millions of years ago a volcano errupted and left a big pile of ash and diamonds dozens of feet deep. Since 1972, the place has been a state park (after failed attempts to make mining it profitable). About 10 diamonds are found daily, and some of them in recent years have been as much as 3, 7, 12, or upwards of 16 carats! That's uncut weigh, of course, but still, they can be big. I didn't do any digging, but I saw the two basic techniques. Either sift through dry dirt, or sift dirt in water. You can rent bowl-shaped screens that will allow the diamonds to settle to the bottom; flip it over and the diamonds are on top. It looked like fun; definitely would be a good date. I was happy to get home to the paper mill and a warm shower.

Mama loves short track short track short track . . .

I spent Saturday night at the local dirt track for a mere Hamilton. The crowd was satisfyingly heinous. It was cold, though. I left before the party ended because I was getting a little bored and because it was getting down in the low 40s. I was also the only one who didn't get the memo on bringing something to sit on. The bleachers are steel (and rusty at that), so camping chairs and throw rugs were the hot tips. Here are some photos and movies. Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture of the guy who drove up over the barricade and into the chain link fence coming out of turn 4. Hmmm, glad I didn't sit that far down . . . All part of the fun.

Last weekend was busy. I took Friday off and flew home late Thursday night. On Friday we got our marriage license and hung out with some folks for some Settlers. On Saturday, we went to an open house at our wedding venue to taste food and meet some of our service providers. We also decided on a place for the rehearsal dinner. That evening we had dinner with my parents, and then the weekend was over and it was time for me to fly home on Sunday.

Sunday morning we got to the airport with a few minutes to spare and hung out in the airport cafe. On the way home I used a free pass to the Admiral's Club that the airline sent me. Yep, I was in the Admiral's Club; I was an admiral . . . for about an hour.

I needed to get out of town for a change, so I drove to Shreveport. My bike is still out of commission, so I got to spend some quality time with my pickup and listen to some podcasts, as well as Cartalk. I went to the Antique Car Museum, which is not much. It is $6, they have about 20 vehicles, and no pictures allowed. The car lady recommended that I have lunch at the Blind Tiger, which is a bar/restaurant down the street. I had a French Chicken Sandwich. It's some boneless fried chicken with a slice of ham and some kind of cheese, served with honey mustard. I walked across a bridge to the Louisiana Boardwalk (pic), which is across the river from Shreveport in Bossier City. It was Christmas-y. The place was big, and they even had a build-a-bear, so this place was the real deal, eh? I also had a good view of the casino/hotels from the riverbank. Basically the hotel is on land while the gambling is only legal on the riverboat (or so I am left to assume). I guess there's some loophole in the law on navigable waterways? Anyhow, it's nice to know that there's somewhere to turn for people who have a problem.

The weather was a little funky.

Anyway, it was not very exciting, but I am glad I went somewhere for a change and added a place to my been-there list.

I went to the International Motorcycle Show, and on the way back I stopped at the JFK museum on Dealey Plaza. Pics are below. Btw, I don't fit on any of these motorcycles. I think the Buell Ulysses was the only one that I could manage. I know I mostly fit on the KLR and the big BMWs, but other than that, I'm out of luck.

As for Dealey Plaza, the grassy knoll was packed. I think there were vagrants who set up shop to talk some kind of nonsense while begging for money.

Johnson Space Center was cool.

Rocket Park features the Saturn V that was slated to be Apollo 18. It sat outside for a couple decades until they built a building around it. It opened three weeks ago after being closed for two years. Lucky us! It is beautifully restored.

We took the Level 9 tour, which was pricey but very well worth it. We had lunch among scientists, engineers, astronauts, and of course, government contractors.

We saw the new mission control, both for STS and ISS. They are much smaller than I imagined. In fact, they are smaller than the old mission control. Still, they're awesome.

We toured the Neutral Buoyancy Lab, which is a huge, 40-foot-deep swimming pool full of divers and astronauts in training.

We also saw the old mission control, which has been reassembled as a little museum. It's really neat. Our tour guide was excellent. I enjoyed hearing about the little ceremonies and traditions, including how much the ill-fated Apollo 1 (and later, Challenger and Columbia) affected the agency. It felt special to be in that room and imagine busy engineers working with slide rules and shoving papers into pneumatic tubes.

The Space Vehicle Mockup Facility is full of hardware, from multi-million dollar replicas of ISS modules to a plywood mock-up of the prototype Crew Exploration Vehicle. I thought the 20 ton gantry cranes were pretty cool, too.

The Space Environment Simulation Lab is an unbelievably huge vacuum chamber that they alternately cool with liquid nitrogen and heat with a "sun" to simulate space.

We walked by one of the labs where work on the Robonaut was underway (I can't imagine that the resemblance to Boba Fett is an accident)

We also checked out the exhibits in the Space Center, all of which were good. Outside of all that are many Disney-land type attractions for kids . . .

Historic Mission Control
This is the last one I got. My camera battery died while we were at the thermal chamber, and this is the only picture I got of Historic Mission Control. I couldn't even see anything on the display, but the camera took one last breath. Only way inside is the level 9 tour. Otherwise you are stuck behind glass, like we were in the active mission control centers.
